Face it

In The Trenches

The trench..on every fashion list of the

essentials in a guy or gals wardrobe, the

trench coat is up there.

Columbo wore it with crumbled nonchalence,

Tin Tin with nickerbockers and Angelina Jollie

with a pair of killer heels. (Hers was in black

leather of course.)

Burberry probably still do it best in either

the classic or restructured versions.

The best thing about them is you could throw one

over a pair of PJs to dash down and get a morning coffee

and croissant, and you will still end up on a best

dressed list.

Shades

There are so many great shades around it

makes it hard to chose.

Retro, big framed glamour, mirrored, or

classically cool.

I just go with my face shape and what suits.

I also try to pick shades that suit my personality

and mood. Don't write a cheque your ass

can't cash, or something like that.

Put it this way, if I wore a pair of mirrored

aviators, I would look more like one of the

Village people than the Rock God I had

perhaps hoped !

As I have lost countless pairs,

(or sat on them), it is rare that I will really

splurge on an expensive pair. However

sunglasses are like jeans. That perfect pair can

be somewhat illusive, so when you stumble across

them...

'just gettem!'

Cherry, Cherry, Baby!

Cherries are so cool. They have to be the

fruit with most street cred.

Why?

I really couldn't say. But no one is about to get

a pineapple tattooed on there hip bone,

are they.

However a tiny bunch of cherries:

Perfect!

There is something glamorous, cheeky

and a bit burlesque about cherries.

A cherry laden bikini top just has that retro

cuteness about it.

Cherries are sexy.

Cherries have had songs written about them.

Cherries even have a cola flavoured after them.

So don't argue with a cherry.

They are a little fruit with a huge personality!

Masks

Feel like adding a touch of incognito to a

costume? Or just can't bear to face the

world after that big night out. Cover up!

Masks have been around since Middle Earth,

that's a couple of hundred years BC,( really

existed outside of 'the Lord of the Rings'!),

where they were used in funeral rituals to

cover the faces of the dead.

They have long since been used as

theatrical devices to tell tales, mysterious

covers for Venetian romantics, mime artists,

disguises for Zorro types and lately

increasingly for health reasons on the

street in this strange time of animal flues.

I love the various street parades around

the world, Mardi Gras and love parades,

where beautifully, ornate or dark and

dangerous masks are often worn.

But my favourite has to be the Mexican

wrestling masks seen below.

Part super hero part comic,

these guys really know the art

of crazy disguise.

Easy Breezy Cover Girl..

These girls have all mastered that art of
cool floaty style...perfect for a summery
day in the city.

Light fabrics and loose layers combined
with interesting and quirky details create a
relaxed but still edgy look.

Phone Fixation

Ring ring...or maybe you can hear the

pitter patter of tiny fingers texting or a

rather annoying Lady Ga Ga ring tone......

Its no secret that we are a phone

obsessed generation...but don't worry...

it's like eating garlic..everybody does it!

Motorcycle Style..

Here are a few bikes with real street
cred.
My favourite is the scooter in Tokyo..so
compact and with storage to boot( 'scuse
the pun).
Plus it has the added advantage of
looking great with a sharp suit.
I wouldn't be surprised if we are all
whizzing about on something similar
sometime soon!

Street offerings

I love the way in so many Asian countries

small offerings are put out in doorways,

shop entrances and especially outside

temples, churches or spiritual centres.

They are constant reminders of how

important spirituality is in our urban

villages.

I also love the way spiritual robes

somehow look so prefect within our cities .

Timeless and minimal, they are more

modern than any other form of dress.

In the west we have appropriated religious

imagery, often loving the drama or symbolic

to drive home a point or make an ironic

gesture. Although tongue in cheek,

they are still evidence of how powerful this

imagery is.
