A year in Pics

A year of skulls and skullduggery, where anything was
possible and the outright odd was common place.

Quirky was definately the new normal and fuschia was
the new black (and we said we don't even want a new
black because we like black and any other colour we
chose to throw on.)

We rolled our pants to mid calf and let our sleeves hang
down past our fingers.
Retro and cutting edge walked down the street hand in
hand.

We grew tired of the 1% that seem to blatantly fuck
everyone else over time and time again to satisfy
their own insatiable desires.

Markets replaced shopping malls as our favourite place
to shop, eat, meander and mix.

Spirituality and the cyber age united to help
brace for and prepare for a brave new world in
2012 .....Watch this Space!

Keith Haring

I've been noticing a lot of street art, and
images in popular culture inspired by
the late great artist Keith Haring.
Here's just one of them ...

Bhakti and Bindi

These markings, often painted on the forehead of
Hindu devotees are often made from the ash of
incense burnt as offerings in front of deities.

These lines painted on the horizontal, represent
devotees of Shiva, while on the vertical, Vishnu.

The red spot is of course the Bindi and is often painted
on by a high priest, representing the feminine aspect
of the individual.

I really find all the symbolism of the Hindu religion so
fascinating and also quite beautiful.

Christmas Trees and Chain Saws

Also at the Kirribilli Markets (yesterdays
post) were these two performance artists.
They tower over everyone on their
stilts and always come as different
characters.
So last weekend they were Christmas Trees..
Carrying mini Chain saws no less !

Too Pretty to Eat !

You know I love markets. Well some of my favourite
just happen to be right near my place in Sydney, on the
edge of the harbour (almost under the Harbour Bridge
in fact. )
The Kirribilli markets are full of interesting gift
ideas and sensational food aswell.
Two of my favourites are these chocolates and Icey Pops
(featured).
These Chocolates are to die for, oh and they happen to be
made by my partner. All biasses aside, I think the
wrapping is so cool as well and have that uniquely cool
quality that sets so few products apart in todays
over saturated foody world.

I also fell in love with these 'Artisan Pops' by Liana
Raine .

What could be more refreshing than one of these on a
sweltering Sydney summers' day ?

Gumboots 2

These two guys worked in a nearby butcher's shop and
were grabbing a bite to eat in there monochromatic
uniforms and gumboots.

Lotus

This fantastic Sculpture , an inflatable giant fuscia
Lotus floating on a pond in Sydney's Botanical gardens,
was part of an annual art festival .
There seem to be more and more attempts to capture
the imagination of city dwellers all over the world.
Public Art can really transform a city and this is a great
case in point.

SUMO

I was staying in a hotel in Cairns, Northern Queensland
and there just happenned to be a Sumo wrestler
convention there...I kid you not!
I took this photo as they all sat and sun-baked by the pool.
It has to be one of my favourites.
What do you think ?

Muscles

I love India!
I feel so at home there . It's like when I step off the
plane my soul relaxes and exhales.

Pumpkin

When I am in India, I love the fact that
everywhere you go, big open smiles greet
you.
I also spotted a colour trend that I think
might just catch on....

Sharp

I spotted this sharply dressed pair
in Johannesburg the other day.

Her quiffed hair and cute shorts and
his cherry red boots and cuff-linked
dapper style perfectly complimented
each other.

Offerings

I love all the garlands of flowers you see all over the
streets of India and Thailand.

In Thailand these offerings (such as the bottle of Fanta
with a sweet smelling garland of Jasmine around its
neck) are placed in the shadow of a building, to thank
Buddha for the use of the land it is built upon.
